We’re all familiar with the tragic story of the Titanic. Yes, Leo and Kate helped tell the story, but the real story now comes from the wreckage that’s left at the bottom of the ocean. At least for the next couple of years, anyway. After it was discovered in 1985, we’ve had just over 30 years of time to examine it, and that time may be running out. Scientists have found proteobacteria on artifacts from the wreckage, that they believe are eating away at the ship. They’ve named them after the ship, ‘Halomonas titanicae,’ and they’re hungry! It’s predicted that the Titanic will be completely eaten away by 2030.

And the story certainly doesn’t end there, items from the ship are constantly popping up at auctions around the world with the most recent being back in October. Someone from the UK paid over $143,000 CAD for a rare key that opened a life jacket cupboard on board the ship. And before you ask, yes, the key was used to save lives by 23 year old steward, Sidney Sedunary from Southampton.
