We’re all familiar with the tune, as it’s one that routinely gets stuck in your head. Here it is in case you need a refresher:

Classic song, nobody’s going to argue that. But one argument that pops up after listening to this song for the umpteenth time in a week…

Is Frosty the Snowman a Christmas song?

Maybe it’s out of sheer desperation to not hear the song anymore. Or maybe it’s because you want to be able to enjoy the song in February. Either way, there are some strong opinions on this.

Kenny believes that it IS a Christmas carol, as the song brings up Christmas feelings. It is also synonymous with Christmas, and it only appears on artists Christmas albums, not as a regular cut on a summer album. So the record labels side with Kenny. And furthermore, the Frosty the Snowman TV special isn’t shown mid-January, BECAUSE IT’S A CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. But is that enough for it to classify as a Christmas carol?

My argument is that there’s no mention of Christmas anywhere in the lyrics. No sleigh bells, no chestnuts on an open fire, nothing but a magical hat and a bunch of children that should be a lot more scared than they are of a transient, felon made out of snow. Frosty is a criminal! And what’s worse is that he knows he’s guilty. Take for example, this section of the song:

He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop,
And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!”
For Frosty the snow man had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye saying “Don’t you cry!”
“I’ll be back again some day!”

So not only is he running from the police, but he’s also threatening that he’ll be back again, and keeps you on your toes by not telling you exactly when he’ll be back. Does that sound like good Christmas feelings to you? Frosty’s bad news, and definitely not a Christmas carol.
